Strictly Game|Harlem Shakes

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have noticed recently a general interest in having rules; or perhaps not rules, but a framework in which to explore. I suppose this makes sense, for people are generally most comfortable if they have a structure to be free in. Often people post here wondering if their outfits are “steampunk,” or if there is a way to integrate their personal style into the steampunk environment.
Given this situation, I would like to offer those of you interested in having some basic rules the following list of points to use as guidelines. Those of you who are already confident in your steampunk style have no need to dwell upon these, but anyone who is concerned or hesitant about how to approach a “steampunk outfit” should feel free to use these points as reference. I hope that they are useful.

Some design thingies, playing with silhouette. We’ve pretty much settled on a female, Meiji-inspired pirate as the character we’ll be designing for. These are just two of the possible silhouettes I’ve been mulling over - I think I like the one on the right.

this one is of course, a polyvore set

Though our project will likely look nothing like this, i’ve been trying to get an image going in my head of what we might work on.

Hannah and I have laid down a good game plan and will get started soon, hopefully with department funding since both of us are broke due to various legitimate/illegitimate reasons.

this is more inspiration for a jacket than whatever that thing underneath it is, i like the texture of the ruffle, very structured, and the puffy shoulders are nice too.  I like that the metal work is minimal, yet still a stand-out aspect of the garment.

this is some design work off of deviantart by ~Adela-Daniels

her design is interesting enough to make it onto my inspiration list though i don’t know if it’s exactly what myself or hannah is aiming for.  I think it might be a little too frilly and not … maybe it’s not quite functional enough for the point i think we’re trying to make here.

which we still have to figure out.

but this is a start, from my end.  can’t wait to see what hanners has come up with!

Hannah and I will be making stuff!

and then blogging about it! It will be fun and awesome and you should totally stop by and give us feedback and discuss with us, and ask questions.

We’re doing this for a class and are really excited to get started.

T/F: We’re slapping corsets on…

You go, ladies!! :)

I am Danielle, but the internet (and most of the real people I interact with) knows me as Clemmentine.

Stage Manager. Props Master. Pin-Up Girl. All around badass.

(hannah already told you that this was me but it’s just so accurate … )

I make up the other half of this kickass, babetacular, crafty as fuuck team that will be (atempting) to make a “steampunk” inspired, historically conscious costume outfit type thing.  We’re still not really sure what all of this will amount to.

it’s about the journey, maaaaaan

this project is meant to spur discussion between us, our peers, and any other crafters/makers out there interested in our project.  We’d appreciate your feedback, comments, tips, experience, complements, candy, and other assorted poison-and-razor-blade-free baked goods.

Expect to hear about:

our triumphs

the times we realize we’ve fucked everything up beyond all reason with only hours before the goddamned thing is due

our research. yes, this is for a class so we’ll more likely than not be writing posts about the things we’re reading and scholastically contemplating

and everything else you know tumblr likes (you know. pics. posts from stupid o’clock. general tom foolery).

If you’ve got anything [worthwhile] to say to us, drop us a line! We’d love to answer questions and generally talk more about ourselves.

Later, brahs.

What up. I’m Hannah, 1/2 of this dynamic costuming duo. Amateur historian, costumer, set technician, cartoonist, big dork.

hai

hai thar.

This is Danielle. She’s a cool kid.

yup
I’ll let her introduce herself.

This is going to be a project process blog focused on Danielle’s and my attempts to make a historically conscious, inspired, totally-not-janky, “steampunk” costume, whatever that means, and the shenanigans that will result.

We’ll be encouraging dialogue, and would love to hear from people about their thoughts on steampunk in general, their experiences with designing and making steampunk clothing, and any questions that may arise.

yup

STUFF TO EXPECT:

This IS for a class, so discussions of research will probably happen

Pictures (that’s what you’re here for, I’m sure)

Swearing whenever one of us stabs herself with a needle

yes

So thanks for dropping by! More to come when we actually figure out what we’re doing.
